Scuba Boat Bottom Cleaning Tools

Cleaning boat bottoms is a recommended monthly maintenance practice that can be performed in the boat slip. Certified scuba divers have the necessary basic skills to clean boats; however, care should be taken to gently clean algae, slime, debris and barnacles. Safe diving practices should also be followed to avoid injuries while underwater and ascending. Boat bottom cleaning tools don't require heavy machinery or soap.
  1. Significance

    • Boat bottom cleaning tools are basic and require minimal special equipment. The boat bottom must be maintained regularly to avoid excessive buildup that can corrode the hull of the boat.

    Basic Equipment

    • Exposure suit, mask, fins and weight system are required basic equipment to descend below the surface. Based on the water conditions and available space, a hood, gloves and a buoyancy compensator device (BCD) may be needed.

    Air Supply

    • A buoy that secures the air tank and provides additional lines is located near the diver. A hose at least 50-feet long is attached to the first stage of the tank, connected to the diver's regulator.

    Cleaning

    • Plastic (non-metal) cleaning pads are sufficient for cleaning the boat bottom without scratching the paint or finish. A heavy-duty scouring pad and a softer cleaning scrubber can remove buildup; sometimes a thin flexible metal scraper can be carefully employed to pry off stubborn debris.

    Convenience

    • Some boat bottom cleaning services use a hookah system to provide a constant air supply, instead of tanks. Air supply should always be monitored by the diver, which can require another longer hose for the gauge or a wireless setup for time and pressure readings.

    Benefits

    • Cleaning your boat bottom provides a regular opportunity to inspect the propellers and mechanical equipment underwater. Zinc and metal cleaning can be included as part of the regular maintenance, thereby avoiding potential costly repairs.
