How to Use Wooden Ice Fishing Poles

Using a wooden ice fishing pole can make the sport more challenging. A wooden ice fishing pole is not very different in construction than a fiberglass or plastic pole, and learning to use one can be simple.

Instructions

Find the right pole for the fish you intend to catch. For certain species, such as trout, you need a more flexible pole. For other species, such as perch, a short, firm pole is recommended.

    • 2

Attach your hook, lure and sinker to the line at the end of your pole. Use minnows as they have been known to attract many fish in the winter months. However, maggots and wax worms can work well, too. Use the reel to move the hook and lure to the appropriate depth of fish you are trying to catch.

Secure a floater to your line. Attach the floater with enough distance from your sinker to keep your line at your desired depth. Strike a balance between the floater and hook. The floater should be able to be pulled down easily so fish do not notice unusual movement when they bite.

Place the pole in a sturdy ice pole holder that bolts down into the ice. Use an ice chisel or drill to carve a 6-inch hole in the ice to place the bottom of your pole. The end of the pole should fit snugly into the ice so it won't spring out the moment a fish bites. You are ready to fish.
