How to Buy the Right Skis

Whether you are an avid skier or just a beginner, the right set of skis is crucial to honing your skills. Perhaps you are sick of ski rentals or cannot justify the cost of rentals for how often you go skiing. Either way, it is important to buy the right skis for you.

Decide what type of skis you need. You will need to figure out what type of skiing you will be doing. You need to know if you will be downhill skiing, alpine skiing or cross-country skiing to decide what type of skis you will need. All of these types of skis are different.

Assess your ski skill level. A different type of ski will be needed if you are a beginner, intermediate or expert skier. As an example, do you enjoy going on the bunny slopes (if so, you are a beginner) or do you enjoy black diamond runs (if so, you can be considered an expert).

Find the appropriate ski length for yourself. Your personal ski length is based on your height. The website Skis suggests finding skis that have a length that is roughly the same height as your shoulder height.
