How to Buy Wrestling Headgear

Wrestling headgear is an extremely important piece of protective equipment. Wrestling headgear was developed to protect the ears of the wrestler from getting what is known as "cauliflower ear" or infections that can be picked up from rolling around on the wrestling mat. Cauliflower ear is when the cartilage in your ear separates from the skin and fills with blood. Over a long period of time, the blood hardens, the cartilage tissue dies and the outer portions of the ear become hard.

Get your head measured and sized by your wrestling coach. Your coach will use a measuring tape to get the circumference of your head so that you can make sure you purchase the right size headgear to ensure maximum protection.

Decide on the type of headgear you would like to purchase. There are a lot of different types of wrestling headgear. One style comes with a face guard that provides protection if you have suffered a broken nose, or some other injury to the face, prior to your match. Another style is the Cliff Keen model, which was the original style of headgear and features foam pads to protect the ears.

Purchase a hair slicker if you have long hair. These slickers are mesh and slide right over the top of your regular headgear. They will prevent your hair from being pulled or getting tangled up and ripped out during the match.

Buy an extra chin cup. A chin cup is the strap that holds the headgear in place. These may snap or come loose during a match, so it is always a good idea to carry around an extra one.
