Tips for How to Be a Good High School Band Majorette
-
Attend Practices
-
Part of being a good majorette means taking practices seriously and attending them faithfully. If your majorette duties include marching in addition to dancing and twirling, practice often. Some majorettes think that marching is just for the school band. Consequently, when they are in parades or in competitions, their marching is not as crisp or defined as the rest of the band. Make sure that you are adept at marching and stepping backwards too. There are times when you will need turn around to face the band while you are performing.
Keep Up Your Appearance
-
Check your appearance before performances to make sure your hair, makeup and uniform looks as good as possible. Eat a well-balanced diet at all times and drink lots of water so that you have lots of energy and remain well hydrated during performances and competitions.
Maintain Conduct
-
Smile often, stand up straight and practice good posture at all times, even when you aren't performing. Signal to the band and other majorettes behind you if you are in a parade and notice dangers such as curbs, holes in the asphalt or other hazards. Some of the band members have large instruments and are unable to notice such risks. If you make a mistake during a performance, carry on as if nothing happened and always strive to be the best majorette you can be.
Be a Good Sport
-
When you are in uniform with your squad and band at competitions or performances, and the band is not playing or marching, don't engage in conversation with other majorettes or members of the band. Even though it is not your turn, you still need to show respect to the other bands and band majorettes. It is important that you do not complain to other members of your team if you feel the judges unfairly criticize your band and majorette performance. Good sportsmanship is as important as performing well and taking criticism with a mature attitude shows that you do your job well as a band majorette.
