How to Become Better at Cheer Jumps

Cheerleading requires dedicated time and practice in order to learn and properly execute moves and routines. As with similar activities such as dance, cheer involves the use of a wide range of muscle groups throughout a routine. Proper training, preparation and the correct mindset is essential to executing the various moves, like jumps. Improving jumps in cheerleading is best accomplished by focusing on basic movements.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay out tumbling mats on the floor of an area that will allow enough room for practicing cheer jumps. Choose a location that has minimal distractions.

    • 2

Stretch properly before starting to practice. Follow any established stretching routines and also incorporate additional stretches that you may need to loosen up. Talk with a coach or athletics trainer to determine additional stretches and how to do them properly.

    • 3

Break the cheer jump down into parts, paying attention to foot and arm placement. For example, prepare for the jump by starting in the proper position with your feet together and your arms down by your sides. Progress through the jump step-by-step to train muscle memory for correct positioning.

Practice gaining height and leg extension with the help of a spotter. Have the spotter stand behind you with their hands on your waist. Instruct the spotter to lift you up as the jump is performed. The spotter will provide safety while you attempt to reach new heights. Perform the jump with proper leg and arm extension.

Practice the cheer jump to music once you have the mechanics down to help hone your basic timing. Use the music your cheerleading squad is using this season, if possible.
