College Cheer Requirements
-
Athleticism
-
The most important requirement to join a college cheerleading squad is a high level of athleticism. Most schools expect its cheerleaders to have a deep understanding of stunting and tumbling, and require cheerleaders to be able to perform at least standing back handsprings or back tucks. College cheerleading differs from high school in that several men are required to join the team as well. Men perform stunts that require above average strength and typically are asked to possess some tumbling skills as well. Tumbling and stunting skills combined with a strong knowledge of choreography, high level of physical fitness and the ability to move and perform chants and cheers simultaneously are the general athletic requirements.
Personality and Attitude
-
Another key component in becoming a successful college cheerleader is possessing the right attitude and personality for the job. Schools look for squad members with upbeat personalities and the desire to engage the crowd at athletic events. Positive attitudes are a must, since cheerleaders represent their school in public. As cheerleading is a team sport, those involved must be strong team players who work well with others and consistently strive to improve. Most schools require that prospective cheerleaders submit either a skill video or written application before tryouts begin. This is a great time to showcase not just athletic skill, but personality and attitude as well.
Grades and Public Performance
-
Balancing a social life, school work and cheer practice can be stressful. However, most college squads require that every member maintain a certain grade point average to stay on the team. A cheerleader must be dedicated not just to her squad and cheerleading obligations but must represent the squad in a professional manner. Failing grades, underage drinking and skipping class are just a few things that can result in not being allowed to participate. In general, a college cheerleader is responsible for his or her actions at all times and is required to positively represent the sqaud, on or off campus.
