Fun Things for Drill Team Camp
-
Letters From Home
-
Prior to the start of camp, have each drill team member's parents send a letter to the camp director. Distribute these to campers after the first few days when they may be missing home. You can also have parents send baby pictures and fun facts about each camper, and put up a bulletin board where other campers can guess who is who based on the pictures or facts. Give a prize for the camper who guesses the most correctly.
Routine Competition
-
During the evenings, campers may still have energy to burn. Encourage them to share their home school's drill team ideas during a routine competition one evening. Each camper can perform her favorite routine from her school's drill team. Campers can cheer each other on and then vote for their favorite routine after the performances are finished. Give the winning camper a prize such as a gift certificate for dance boots or a dance costume.
Spirit Sticks
-
Spirit sticks are popular ideas at drill team and cheerleading camps. You can decorate a stick and pass it along each day to a camper who has an outstanding attitude or award a spirit stick at the end of camp to the camper or drill team with the most energy and spirit. For a twist, you can allow campers to decorate their own spirit sticks on the first night and then pass them on at some point during the camp to a fellow camper that they feel shows spirit. The camper with the most spirit sticks at the end of camp can win a special prize.
Meet and Greet
-
High school drill team members will enjoy the opportunity to meet and talk to collegiate drill team women or members of a professional dance or cheerleading squad. If possible, invite your local college or professional drill team to visit your camp. Make this visit a surprise by posting it on the schedule as a run or other grueling activity. Give campers a chance to ask questions and pose for pictures with these other women.
