1
Look up a local African or African American community centers. Stepping is a recreational activity and it's possible that the community center might sponsor one.
-
2
Contact universities that have chapters of historically African American sororities and fraternities on campus. These organizations are known to practice stepping during performances and shows. The chapter presidents might have information on how you can join the team.
-
3
Ask about auditions once you've located a step team that suits your skill level. You'll want to know the time, date, location and any additional try-out details. If you've missed a recent try-out, request a private audition during which you can perform a self-choreographed solo stepping piece. To choreograph the piece, use mainstream stepping movies like "Stomp the Yard" for inspiration.
-
4
Wear loose fitting pants or shorts along with a pair of stepping boots to the audition. In order to convince the judges, you want to appear as though you're already on a team.
-
5
Pack for the audition, including items such as a bottle of water and a small snack. If you've choreographed your routine with music, bring a copy of that with you as well. Perform with confidence, focus and high energy at your audition and then wait to see if you are called to join the squad.
