How to Make a Blow Horn

Originally intended for use as a warning signal in applications like boating, air horns have become synonymous with sporting events. From football to soccer, virtually any large outdoor sporting event will have an air horn blast or two. As popular as air horns have become, many events have banned their use. In addition, the horn only lasts as long as its compressed air cannister stays pressurized. You can make an affordable, virtually inexaustible air horn using some simple materials.

Instructions

    • 1

Cut a hole in the bottom of a 35mm film cannister. Use a hobby knife and make the whole about the diameter of a drinking straw.

    • 2

Cut a second hole the same diameter in the side of the cannister.

    • 3

Cut a balloon in half with scissors and discard the inflation end.

    • 4

Remove the top from the film cannister and stretch the balloon over the open top.

    • 5

Replace the cap over the top of the balloon.

    • 6

Insert the straw in the hole in the bottom of the cannister until it makes contact with the balloon.

    • 7

Blow into the hole in the side of the cannister to sound the horn. Move the straw further in or out of its hole to produce your desired sound.
