Character and Ethics in Sports

Cheating
-
Cheating is a major issue when it comes to character and ethics in sports. Athletes may be motivated to cheat as a means of winning money or renown, or simply due to a strong sense of competition combined with a fear that the competition may be too difficult to overcome honestly. Cheating presents a number of problems, however. Not only does it produce unfair results, but it also undermines the true competitive spirit of sports. Because of this, claims of cheating are taken seriously in sports. To prevent cheating, sports typically include a referee or other official who monitors player behavior and can objectively judge events.
Being a "Good Sport"
-
Athletes are called to be good sports when competing. More concretely, being a "good sport" includes being a gracious winner and avoiding bitterness when losing. Athletes must not excessively brag or complain once a competition is over. Because of this, athletes are taught the value of being good sports when they are young. Youth sports coaches and parents must teach the importance of fairness, humility and grace to their young players. When these principles are observed, sports offer not only entertainment but also serve as an opportunity for character building.
Drugs and Supplements
-
Doping, or the use of illegal drugs or supplements, is another ethical issue that affects modern sports. Such performance-enhancing drugs allow athletes to improve strength and endurance, giving them an unfair advantage and possibly risking their health. Athletes that have been accused of doping may see their reputation damaged and, in extreme cases when drug use has been proven, such athletes can even lose past titles or awards. Claims of doping are especially rampant in sports that involve speed, strength or endurance such as track and field, baseball and cycling, but it can affect virtually all sports. Professional sports leagues have installed doping policies and protocols to address this problem.
Role Models
-
Because they are considered public figures and typically garner the respect and admiration of the young people who watch them play, athletes may be seen as role models. The advantage of having them serve in this role is that they can promote healthy living, exercise and hard work. Conversely, athletes can also negatively influence young fans. When young players see their favorite athletes engaging in illegal or immoral behavior, they may be inspired to behave similarly. Thus it is essential for professional or high-profile athletes to make the right moral decisions both on and off the court or field.
