Basketball Bake Sale Ideas

A bake sale is an easy way for a basketball team to raise funds. Teammates may need money to buy uniforms, shoes or to attend a tournament in a different state. Bake sales are a proven method to make money; the team can sell items to parents, teachers, students and others in the community. Even locals who aren't otherwise interested in the team may show up to buy a few treats and goodies. Include larger items, such as cakes and pies, in addition to single-serving treats like brownies and cupcakes.

  1. Add a Grill

    • Increase your sales by going beyond the traditional baked items; add a grill to the event. Ask parents to donate hot dogs, condiments, hot dog buns and canned drinks. Let them know that you accept other items, including bratwurst and hamburgers. This helps parents who don't like baking, or don't have time to bake, still contribute to the event. Offer bake sale attendants the chance to buy a quick lunch or cold drink, in addition to the sweet treats.

    Healthy Bake Sale

    • Hold a healthier bake sale. Look for ways to reduce fat and calories in traditional treats, such as cupcakes and cookies. Adding applesauce in place of the oil is one option, as is using a lower fat oil or using egg whites instead of whole eggs. Divide the team into small groups, asking each to come up with a healthy alternative to their favorite treat. Offer the items for sale, with information on why each one is a healthier choice than the traditional bake sale offerings.

    Basketball Themed Items

    • Create a few treats with a basketball theme. Dye cookie icing orange and coat sugar cookies with the icing. Then add the seams of the basketball with black icing. Decorate cupcakes by coating with the orange frosting and using black icing for the seams. Alternatively, top the cupcakes with one of the cookies, using a dollop of frosting as "glue". Divide the team into small groups and let each group decorate cakes, cookies and cupcakes, using icing dyed in the team colors. You can even make your own trail mix. Pour the trail mix into single serving bags and tie with a matching ribbon. As an added bonus, add coated chocolate candies in the school colors.
