How to Practice Marching Band Formations

Formations are a key component of any marching band show. Seen from above, they give the audience a sense of unity and order that creates a pleasing visual effect. Formations can make up letters, symbols or complex geometrical shapes. Each marching band member performs a significant function in making up each of the formations. Practice is essential to make sure you are always in the right place at the right time.

Instructions

  1. Practice Marching Band Formations

    • 1

Begin at your starting point, where you would line up with the marching band to march onto the field.

    • 2

Locate your first target point and march to it, following the path designated for you. If practicing by yourself without music, try to hear the rest of the band in your head and march in time.

    • 3

Come to a stop at your target point, either standing still or marking time, whichever is called for by the show.

    • 4

Locate your next target point and march to it, again trying to keep time.

    • 5

Repeat this process until you have successfully marched to every target point in the show.

    • 6

Have a more experienced fellow band member watch to make sure you are hitting your target points.
