How to Write a Marching Band Contract

A marching band contract is used to bind other band members to certain obligations as a requisite for remaining in the band. These obligations are generally monetary, behavioral or academic in nature, and are sometimes a combination of all three. The contract usually lays out expectations and consequences for failing to meet those expectations. To write such a document, you'll want to put down your expectations of each band member on paper, as clearly as possible.

Instructions

  1. Write a Marching Band Contract

    • 1

Outline the elements of the contract on paper, taking into account input from school administrators, other marching band instructors and booster club members.

    • 2

Write an introduction to the contract, welcoming students to the band and expressing your general hopes for a productive and rewarding season.

    • 3

Lay out all fees required of band members. These may include general fees, instrument/uniform rentals and travel expenses. If there are payment plan options, list them here, stating the due dates clearly for all fees.

    • 4

List the fees associated with lost or damaged uniforms, instruments and other school property. Be as specific as possible.

    • 5

State any academic expectations. If students are required to maintain a certain grade point average to remain in the band, put it in the contract.

    • 6

List all behavior and procedural expectations. Many bands have a pre-show inspection conducted by section leaders. Let your band members know in advance how they are expected to look and behave during inspection, at practice and on the field.

    • 7

Insert a line at the bottom for the student's signature and the date. For high schools and lower grades, include a line for a parent or guardian signature.
