How to Build a Ramp for Fly Balls

Building a ramp for fly balls provides a valuable tool for teaching players how to catch pop flies, and also creates a fun way to launch baseballs through the air. With some pretty basic materials and a little bit of craftsmanship, you will be able to create a durable fly ball ramp of your own. When a pitching machine is not available, this contraption will do the trick.

Instructions

    • 1

Assemble an H-shaped frame. Specific measurements will depend on your personal preference. However, you do not want the two vertical pieces to be more than 2 feet across. Hammer your 2x4s into place to create the H frame. Attach a metal spike to the bottom of each vertical piece so it can stay in place in the ground.

    • 2

Saw your PVC pipe in half vertically. This will be your ramp. Prop it up against the horizontal piece of your H frame. Angle it to your preference and screw it into place.

    • 3

Attach each end of a bungee cord to the tops of the H frame. This will serve as a sling shot, so be sure to get a size that will allow a fair amount of slack after it is attached to each post.

Place a baseball in the PVC pipe. Hold the bungee cord to the back of the ball with your thumb. Use your palm and other fingers to grip the ball. Pull the ball and cord back and release. The ball will be whipped up the ramp by the bungee cord and launched into the air.
