How to Set Up
-
1
Point guard brings the ball down the middle of the court.
-
2
Forwards set up at at the elbows. The elbow is the point where the lane line and the free-throw line meet.
-
3
Wings set up in the corners just inside the 3-point line.
How to Execute the Play
-
4
Once the point guard gets between the half-court line and the top of the key, the forwards turn and establish a screen position that the wings will use to get open. The forwards must read the wing's defender and set the screen that will most effectively open up the wing for a pass. Refer to my article: "How to Execute an Off Ball Screen in Basketball" for tips (see link in Resources below). After the screen is made, the forward positions himself/herself in the corner.
-
5
The point guard chooses a side of the court to make the initial pass to the wing (the point guard should not make a pass from the middle of the court, as it can be stolen more easily).
-
6
The point guard makes the pass to the wing and goes to the other side of the court to set a screen on the opposite wing's defender.
-
7
The opposite wing comes off the screen and cuts through the lane looking for the pass. If the pass does not get made, he/she should set up on the ballside block.
-
8
While the wing is cutting through the lane, the point guard sets a screen on the player defending the forward opposite the ball. This forward cuts to the free-throw line looking for a pass, while the point guard assumes the position in the weakside short corner (other side of court from the ball about 12 feet from basket).
-
9
If the forward does not get the pass at the free-throw line, he/she pops out to the top of the key to receive a ball reversal pass.
-
10
If the first cutter (wing-through lane) and second cutter (forward to free-throw line) do not get the pass, you want to move the ball back to the middle of the court. The forward pops out to the top of the key to receive the pass from the wing.
-
11
While the pass is being made, the wing that is on the block goes out to set a back screen on the forward in the corner. That forward cuts through the lane looking for the ball and a shot in the lane.
-
12
If the pass is not made to the forward cutting through the lane, that forward proceeds to the other side of the court and gets a screen from the player in the short corner (the original point guard) and pops out to the wing to receive the pass. While this is happening, the wing on the other side (the wing who received the first pass to start the play) sets a down screen on the player in his/her corner for that player to pop out to the wing for a pass.
-
13
The player with the ball makes the pass to the player at the wing and the process starts all over again.
