Basketball Operations Job Description

The person in charge of basketball operations has a variety of responsibilities in the total program. This person's duties can include planning team travel, coordinating summer camps, ordering uniforms and ensuring that players are meeting academic requirements. A job in basketball operations usually is seen as a path into college coaching.

  1. Summer Camp

    • The director or coordinator of basketball operations is responsible for the running of summer basketball camp. The duties include getting information to local kids, hiring a staff of qualified coaches, collecting the money from the campers and making sure all aspects of the camp run smoothly. The basketball operations person may have to do a little coaching at the camp, first aid and public speaking. This part of the job requires the person to be flexible.

    Team Travel

    • Coordinating team travel on all road trips is part of this job. Team travel can include bus or van rental reservations, flight reservations, hotel reservations and restaurant reservations. In addition, when traveling, the director of operations will be the main contact with the other team to ensure that everything is going as planned regarding game start time and practice times.

    Academics

    • The basketball operations person is responsible for monitoring the academic progress of players on the team. This includes making sure they are attending class, turning in all homework and scoring well on tests and quizzes. This requires a high level of organization as well as the ability to effectively communicate with faculty and administrators.

    Team Gear

    • Ordering team gear is the responsibility of someone in basketball operations. In addition, it is also necessary to size players for the gear. Keeping detailed records of each player's measurements is of the utmost importance. The director of basketball operations might order team shoes, sweats, practice gear and travel outfits. In most cases, each team will have a rep with whom they work from a sporting goods company.

    Administrative Duties

    • Handling administrative duties such as answering the phone, sending faxes and filing paperwork also are part of the job. This person is often the main contact within a basketball program. Because of this, other schools, the media or anyone with a question will be in touch with the basketball operations director. All expense reports and grade reports will be filed by this person.
