6 Ideas for an End-of-Season Get-Together

It’s tradition to mark the end of the season with a celebration. It doesn’t matter if you lost every game! The idea is to honor lessons learned and friendships and memories made.

As a coach, you want to create a memorable experience for your players and their families. Only your imagination and remaining budget are your limits. Why not consider these six ideas for an end-of-season get-together?

1. Movie Night

Movies such as “Goal!” and “Green Street Hooligans” can inspire your players and keep their enthusiasm ablaze long after the season ends. Why not use one or more of these classic soccer flicks to celebrate the end of your season? You can make this activity friendly for your players and their entire families — including any members who may continue to isolate due to medical frailty.

Instead of pulling out the VCR, why not host an outdoor movie night that recreates the drive-in experience? When selecting a location, pay attention to details like the time and direction of the sunset — you don’t want a gigantic glare on your screen. While you can rent LED video walls for the ultimate picture quality, you can also DIY and use the school’s projector.

2. Adventure Park

Why not treat your team to a bit of fun and cross-training to end your successful season? Depending on your location, you can find adventure parks that offer everything from laser tag to ziplines to trampolines.

Please remember to follow all safety rules when taking your team on a field trip, even if you’re well-acquainted with taking them on the road. For example, you should always require permission slips and give all participants name tags, even if they know each other well. Your players might not recognize each other’s parents if you get separated.

3. Potluck

One way to be sure every player gets something they like to eat at your end-of-season get-together is to host a potluck. This idea works well if you have team members with extended families, all of whom want to be involved.

If you’re choosing this option, please exercise sensitivity toward those with food allergies or who are following specific diets. You might want to distribute information on various sensitivities in your invitation to raise awareness. While everyone will bring a dish they can eat, they should also label the ingredients so that no one unintentionally consumes something they shouldn’t.

At the event, let those with allergies serve themselves first. Doing so minimizes the risk of cross-contamination. Bring extra serving spoons along with one for each station.

4. Camp Out

The weather is still nice enough in many parts of the country to enjoy camping out for the night. Doing so can help bolster your team’s sense of camaraderie before they part ways for the season. Many wilderness tasks such as gathering firewood require teamwork and cooperation.

Provide each participant with a list of suggested supplies. It’s wise for each member to dress warmly with thermal underwear and devices like hand warmers to keep toasty if the temperature plummets.

5. Hit the Road

Field trips don’t have to require an overnight visit. If there’s somewhere your team always wanted to go, why not culminate your season in a trip? For example, if you live in the Dallas, Texas, area, why not plan a journey to the National Soccer Hall of Fame?

You can also find group and student rates at various museums and science centers. Such activities reinforce the idea that, yes, learning is fun!

6. The Classic Pizza and Game Night

Who said there was anything wrong with a classic pizza and game night? If you’re a coach on a budget, this idea might be the most friendly on your wallet. You can dine outdoors at the field, picnic-style, to make this activity more friendly to players with family members who hesitate to attend indoor events.

The best way to ensure success is to bring various games and activities for everyone to enjoy. Classics such as Twister blend well with modern favorites like Scythe and Mysterium. You can also bring along a few balls for those youngsters who aren’t ready to depart the field just yet.
