How to Coach High School Sports
Instructions
-
-
1
Research the requirements for becoming a high school coach. These vary from state to state and sport to sport.
-
2
Meet the necessary requirements. These will typically include a registration process, recommendations, proof of completion of courses in coaching and sports medicine. They rarely include a college degree.
-
3
Check with the appropriate state high school athletic association for open coaching positions regularly.
-
4
Begin a coaching career as an assistant coach, even if it's a volunteer position. Any experience helps pad your resume.
-
5
Network with other coaches. This is possible not only by competing against them but also by attending coaching clinics. Club sports and traveling teams are also great places to network.
-
6
Transform your sport by developing a new means of training or by introducing different strategies for team sports such as new offensive or defensive philosophies. Soon you will be known as that coach who invented an innovative new system for your sport.
-
7
Form relationships with professional athletes in your sport whenever possible. Many professional athletes would like to get involved with high school sports at some point, whether it's for charitable reasons or public relations purposes.
-
8
Cultivate relationships with athletic directors at regional high schools and be vigilant about openings for head coaching positions. Persistence pays off.
