Instructions

    • 1

Select a sport you would like to be involved with. There are far too many sports and activities to try to be involved in more than one or two of them.

    • 2

Determine the logistics. Where will you practice? Where will games be played? How many athletes will be on the team? Can you coach or manage or will you have to find someone else to teach the participants the skills they need? Do you need to purchase uniforms?

    • 3

Find an organization that oversees and manages that sport. There are organizations that exist for almost every high school sport imaginable. They will provide a framework for running events and tournaments. You will most likely have to join that organization for a small fee.

    • 4

Attract a sponsor. If there is equipment to buy, uniforms to order, expenses to rent a facility or travel to competitions, a sponsor might be required to defray those costs. Some local businesses may jump at the chance to show that they are supporting activities for young people.

    • 5

Recruit players to be on the team. You will probably want to have an idea of how many athletes are interested before you start the process, but do not name your team before the previous steps are in place. If you are not able to get a sponsor or to join an overseeing organization, there may not be a team. It is not fun telling kids that something is not going to happen after they get their hopes up.

    • 6

Contact other individuals who are organizing similar high school sports teams and schedule competitions. Whatever organization you join can play a role in connecting you with other teams in your area.

    • 7

Have fun. Make sure that both you and the athletes enjoy yourselves. Sports are supposed to be an escape from pressure and stress. Do everything you can to ensure a positive environment. Acting like Bobby Knight will only make you and the kids miserable.
