How to Be a Successful Coach

A team is only as good as its coach. Whether you are coaching a school or private team, there are certain traits you should utilize to be the best coach out there. A team follows you as their coach and will look to you for guidance in the game, at practice and in their lives. To be a successful coach you will need to like your team, be organized and set a responsible image for your team to follow.

Instructions

    • 1

Have a positive attitude. Portray a positive attitude during practice, at games and during losses or errors. Give players reassurance with encouragement even when they err. For example, if a player misses a play, let him know that you recognize his effort, that he did a good job regardless of the outcome and follow up with how he can avoid making the mistake again.

    • 2

Enjoy the people you are coaching. Show your players compassion and be interested in their lives, hobbies and skills.

    • 3

Make coaching exciting for your players. Do not use endless drills at practice or constantly make practice and games appear like a chore. Give players some fun time as a group without a practice. For example, organize a dinner night with the team on a day they do not have practice.

    • 4

Set goals for your players. Each player should have an individual goal and the entire team should have a group goal to meet for their skills, scores and other aspects of the sport they play.

    • 5

Be patient. Remember that not every player is the same and not every player will pick up new skills at the same rate. Be willing to organize practices and drills around each player's abilities and do not leave players feeling that they will be unsuccessful if they do not keep up with the others.

    • 6

Be organized. Organize paperwork and fill out any needed forms as soon as possible. Do not save meetings and important game business to the last minute.

    • 7

Show fairness amongst your players. Never favor one player over the others or single out a player in the group. Show each player the same amount of respect and attention.

    • 8

Show loyalty to your players. Be interested in your players both personally and professionally. Take interest in their lives and understand what outside influences may be affecting their overall performance in their sport. Be a friend to your players and ensure that each player knows they can confide in you.
