How to Measure Team Success

There's a lot more to measuring a team's success than simply looking at wins and losses. Performance measurement methods used by large corporations can often be applied to sports teams. Successful business teams thrive on efficiency and determining their strengths and weaknesses. Sports teams can do the same. Football teams look at their defensive unit's number of takeaways and total points allowed. In baseball, lineups are evaluated based on their total runs scored. In college basketball, it's all about a team's performance in the NCAA tournament. Whichever the method, measuring team success can help cut down on inefficiency, and, in turn, promote productivity.

Instructions

    • 1

Establish a game plan that is customized for each opponent that you face. Observe how well your team follows the game plan. Success often comes with following an outlined strategy.

    • 2

Look at your roster after the season and compare it to what it was at the season's start. Success might sometimes be defined simply as finishing the year without having any players quit. Player retention means that members of the team generally thought practice was worth their time.

    • 3

Check the numbers your team put up over the course of the year, both collectively and individually. This means looking at touchdowns and turnovers in football, batting average and earned run average in baseball, and points scored and allowed in basketball. Any individual accolades, such as "Most Valuable Player" for your league, are generally an indication of team success as well.

    • 4

Observe the expression of your players on sidelines during games. Enthusiasm and active participation are signs of a successful team. On the flip side, unsuccessful teams tend to sulk and complain about poor performance.
