How to Bowl With a Left Arm Spin

In cricket, left-arm spin bowlers typically make the ball turn from the leg side to the off side when facing a right-handed batsman. Because the ball is bowled with the other hand, left-arm spinners make the ball turn in the opposite direction to that of an off-spinner. Left-arm spinners provide the captain with another bowling option; they usually bowl from around the wicket and aim to lure the batsman into a shot as the ball moves away from the bat.

    • 1

Decide with your captain how you plan to get the batsman out.

    • 2

Set the field accordingly and know where you want to pitch the ball.

    • 3

Measure your run-up and mark your starting point with a plastic disc or some sawdust.

    • 4

Spread the middle joints of your middle and index fingers across the seam of the ball. The ball should rest against your third finger, but your thumb should not play much part in the delivery.

    • 5

Start your run-up towards the wicket, moving at a controlled pace. Bring your arm up over your shoulder and plant your lead foot, ensuring that you don't overstep the crease. As you release the ball, turn your wrist and index finger to generate spin on the ball. Your wrist and finger should turn the ball in a counter-clockwise direction.
