How to Set Goals in Sports Science

1
Identify and write down the large-scale goal you want to achieve within your sport over the next 10 years. This large-scale goal should be something about which you are passionate.
-
2
Break down the large-scale goal into smaller goals that will allow you to develop and attain the long-term goal. Begin by creating a five-year plan of smaller goals and then a one-year plan. Continue this process by creating goals for the next month, week and even the next day.
-
3
Review your plans and make sure that each plan and set of goals fits with the lifestyle that you want to have. If conflicts arise, then goals and plans should be progressively changed to achieve your goals.
-
4
Review that goals are specific, measurable, attainable, relevant and time-bound. These steps are also easily remembered by the acronym SMART.
-
5
Assess your progress and goals periodically and be prepared to alter your plans. Look at your short-term goals. If you have failed to achieve your goal in the specified time frame, set new short-term achievable goals. If you achieved a goal more quickly than expected, other short-term and long-term goals may be adjusted to fit the quicker goal achievement. Sport situations often are unpredictable with injury and sickness that will cause setbacks in training. Allowing for flexibility will allow for changes in goals as well as continued motivation.
-
6
Write down and tell others of your goals. Committing to goals with more determination is easier if shared with other individuals. Writing down goals as well as keeping track of training will allow for an easier view of progress.
