How to Set Realistic Recruiting Goals

Recruiting qualified student athletes is the lifeblood of any college sports team, whether it's a nationally known program or a smaller school. The team must be made up of solid students and players in order for the program to be successful. Recruiting these student athletes is something that's a never-ending project that changes from year to year. Each season, every team must bring in a new batch of qualified players who will help them compete at a high level.

Instructions

    • 1

Identify your needs. Look at your current roster and identify how many players you need for the next season and in what positions. If you graduated a group of players, you'll need to replace them with freshmen to keep your roster full.

    • 2

Develop a list of student athletes you'd be interested in recruiting. This list can be developed by closely watching the newspapers for names of players in your area. You can also get names by attending all-star games and events and recording the names of the players on each roster. Contacting high school coaches and asking about players who are college-level prospects will let you add additional names to your list.

    • 3

Narrow down your list. You should know exactly how many kids you need to recruit to reach your desired number. For example, if you know that out of every 10 players you recruit, you usually get one to sign, you know you need to recruit 30 players to get three. This isn't an exact science, so it's always a good practice to over-recruit rather than under-recruit. You can narrow down your list by location and skill level.

Determine the top players on your list. Rank the players on your list by position and skill level. Recruit the players at the top of the list the hardest because they'll help your program the most and there will be more competition for them.
