How to Create Athletic Uniforms

Whether coaching baseball, football, basketball, hockey, soccer or any other sport, coaches and managers will often be called upon to create new uniforms for the upcoming season. This can be a simple task regardless of the sport, provided that the coach in question understands some basic concepts about creating those uniforms. That is because there can be a lot of steps involved when deciding on that perfect set of athletic clothes.

  1. Creating an Athletic Uniform

    • 1

Consult your league's bylaws for any rules regarding uniforms. This is an important step because a coach will learn what colors and styles are available and allowed. Leagues may have restrictions on certain color schemes. For example, some league may require all players to dress in a solid-colored shirt, while others allow for multicolored. League bylaws also will give instructions on the use of fabrics allowed as well.

    • 2

Get a budget. This is important. A coach may think it could be cool to have the team wear home and road uniforms in the best possible fabrics, but that costs a lot of money. Decide how much will be spent and who will pay for it before deciding on anything else.

    • 3

Decide how much detail the uniforms will get. This means deciding if you plan to just provide shirts; shirts and pants; shirts, pants and socks or maybe more. Some sports will require more coordination than others. For example, a hockey coach will have to coordinate jerseys, pants, socks and helmets. If coaching youth sports, a good rule of thumb is to create a jersey and use generic-colored pants. If the sport requires a hat or other headgear, make sure to get that.

Shop around, either online or in person. Most athletic stores and screen printing shops have programs that allow customers to review colors that match and blend well, see what they would like in a uniform and what kinds of graphics can be used to spice up the look.
