USAT Coaching Certification

Serious competitors are drawn to the sport of triathlon, testing participants' strength, stamina and endurance. Therefore, it seems only reasonable that serious coaches would be drawn to seek certification toward the pursuit of developing excellent athletes.
  1. The Process

    • USA Triathlon's coaching certification is a rigorous process with specific requirements. Coaches are expected to maintain membership in USAT, attend a series of clinics, take a written exam and undergo a background check. It is also recommended that candidates become CPR certified.

    Certification Levels

    • There are three levels of certification for USAT coaches. Each level is progressively more intensive, requiring coaches to provide mentor letters and make oral presentations, in addition to attending clinics and taking written exams. Level III Certification also calls for coaches to have proven their merit by coaching a top 15 finisher at world championship events.

    Cost

    • As of 2010, a background check costs approximately $20, and the clinic for Level I Certification costs $525.

    Benefits

    • Having a USAT coaching certificate is a prestigious honor that opens many professional doors. Certification also provides networking opportunities and listing of the coach's name in the "USAT Certified Coach Directory."
