How to Dress for Extreme Skiing

Skiing is the perfect sport for people who love the snow and the adventure of the mountain slopes. Whether you snow ski in spring or winter, you need to dress appropriately for health and safety. For extreme skiing, it's especially important to dress carefully.

Instructions

    • 1

Dress in layers of clothing for extreme skiing. Although most people know that layers are best for snow skiing, it's important to remember that when you are into extreme sports, extra attention to detail is wise. Four layers are usually recommended, especially when you are skiing at higher elevations.

    • 2

Know that the first layer of dress for extreme skiing should be a shirt and pants. The old-fashioned long flannel underwear is not the best choice. The "breathable" fabrics that keep moisture away from your skin are best. They help prevent that clammy feeling you get when you've exerted yourself in extreme sports, sweated and then cooled off.

    • 3

Wear an insulated shirt, sweater, sweatshirt, vest or turtleneck as your next layer when you dress for extreme skiing. Whatever keeps you the warmest is best. Also, make sure that the type of clothing you choose for this layer is comfortable and not too tight. As you layer your clothing when you dress, make sure you still have plenty of freedom of movement for extreme skiing.

    • 4

Make the next layer of clothing a fleece jacket or a soft-shell jacket. This layer may not be necessary if you're skiing in the spring and the temperatures are not that severe. But, remember that the extra layers also provide extra protection from harm in case of falls in extreme skiing.

    • 5

Finish dressing for extreme skiing by choosing an insulated jacket and insulated ski pants. You must have something that's both warm and comfortable. Insulation is important to protect against snowfall, wind and freezing rain.

    • 6

Choose a helmet instead of just a hat for extreme skiing. Because of the extra-excessive jumps and turns involved in this type of skiing, a helmet is a safety precaution. Of course, you must also wear goggles and good gloves to protect your eyes and hands.
