Ideas for How to Build a Snowboard Grind Rails

Building your own snowboard grind rail is a fun and cheap way to practice your technique away from the mountain. This rail is made with supplies all found at nearby hardware stores, and should take no longer than three hours to complete the entire project. The speed of the project also is determined by your welding skills. You change the height and length with different amounts of railing, but this one is 8 feet long and 2 feet tall.

Things You'll Need

  • 8-foot long, 2-inch square metal tube
  • 2 - 2-foot long, 2-inch square metal tube
  • 2 - 2-foot long, 2-inch flat metal
  • Wire welder
  • Welding helmet
  • Welding gloves

Instructions

    • 1

Lay the two 2-foot long metal flat pieces on the ground 6 feet away from each other. They should be placed parallel. These act as the balancing/foundation for the entire rail.

    • 2

Weld the 2-foot long square tubes to the flat metal pieces. The weld should encompass the entire joint/connection between the flat metal pieces and the square tubing. You should have two T-shaped foundations that will serve as the device to hold up the 8-foot long square tube that you actually grind on.

    • 3

Place your T-shaped foundations 6 feet apart with the square tubing facing the sky. Place the 8-foot long square tube on top of the two pieces with a foot of metal overlapping each T-shaped foundation. Weld the 8-foot long square tubing to the foundations at the point where the bottom of the 8-foot long square tubing meets the 2-foot long square tubing. The weld should encompass the entire joint between the two.
