How to Choose Snowmobile Clothing

1
Choose a helmet with a tinted and polarized visor to protect your eyes from glare and ultraviolet radiation. Look for a helmet specifically designed and approved for snowmobiling. Try on a helmet before purchasing, and make sure the chin strap fastens snugly. Purchase a fitted hat or cap to wear under your helmet.
-
2
Pick a layer of clothing made from a cotton blend to wear closest to the body, instead of all cotton. Choose long underwear that fits well but not too snugly.
-
3
Buy one pair of cotton socks to wear closest to the feet, followed by two layers of wool socks. Buy boots that fit over all three layers of socks without being too tight. Allowing a layer of air between each layer of clothing keeps feet insulated and warm.
-
4
Try on a few wool turtleneck sweaters and wool pants until you find one that fits over your long underwear layer with a little space in between.
-
5
As your outer layer, choose a snowmobiling suit that comes in two pieces: bib overall-style pants and a coat. Look for material that is water resistant instead of waterproof so it breathes. Both pieces need insulation, such as down or fiberfill. Your coat should have long sleeves to cover the tops of your gloves and a high neck to protect against wind. Choose a set that features storm flaps covering the fasteners.
