How to Choose a Karate Gi

A gi is the uniform all karate practitioners wear during training. A karate gi consists of a jacket and pants that have a basic design. The jacket wraps around and usually ties together at the side. The karate belt goes around the middle to help hold everything together. Karate gis come in a few different textures and weights, and your sensei and school often determines which type you choose.

Instructions

    • 1

Ask your sensei if he requires you to purchase your gi through the school or if he recommends a particular brand or style for use in his class.

    • 2

Try on several different sized gis, if you are not certain of the size you will need. Ensure the length of the pants and jacket sleeves are in accordance with what is acceptable for your class and style of karate.

    • 3

Choose a color of gi that is worn by the other students in your class. Usually a white gi will suffice in any class. Black is also an acceptable color. Some schools may use a more colorful gi, such as blue or red, to show individuality.

Choose a gi that is appropriate for its intended use. A lighter, 8 oz. gi is appropriate for most beginning students. If you participate in tournaments, however, you may want a heavier, crisper 10 to 12 oz. gi that will snap when you perform kata.
