1
Pass the exams to move from a white-belted novice, to a gold or yellow belt, and then to the orange belt. This demonstrates your progression from a novice with no knowledge of karate, just as the white belt has no color, to a student who is creating a firm foundation in the martial art, as represented by the earthen tones of a gold or yellow belt. Finally, you show you are changing in your knowledge and skill by obtaining the orange belt, representative of autumn and the changes the earth experiences.

2
Develop the speed and clarity of motion with which you move. A major factor that will determine if you are awarded the green belt is your ability to perform the various techniques with speed and fluidity. Focus on improving each of the movements. Review the basic movements which are your foundation, and develop ways to build upon them. Be innovative in applying the principles from each movement to your abilities, in every unique situation. As a green belt, you will also be expected to demonstrate greater control of your emotions.

3
Learn techniques of self-defense against a gun, knife or club. Master the self-defense techniques of the lower belts, such as the various chokes, grabs, and holds (bear hugs).
-
4
Focus on improving your kicks. To pass the green belt test, you will need to demonstrate mastery of both offensive and defensive front, side and round-house kicks. Additionally, you must exhibit proficiency in the spinning heel rake, front leg heel rake, turn kicks and jump front kicks.
-
5
Prepare yourself for more extensive sparring. You will have to participate in at least two sparring rounds with equipment. Here you must demonstrate ability to incorporate multiple, varied techniques and maintain your focus and proper attitude throughout.
