1
Start by determining whether karate is a good sport for you to begin. Ask yourself whether you are drawn to physical contact sports and a sense of discipline. Do some research on the Internet or in a bookstore or library about the sport of karate to learn some of its history and help in your decision.
-
2
Find a good karate studio (dojo) in your area and begin taking lessons. To achieve black belt status, you will need immense dedication. Go to your studio classes at least two times a week to help you gain maximum benefit from the teachings.
-
3
Find out the belt ranking system at your dojo and whether they use the Shotokan system or the Gojo-Ryu system, which are the two most practiced karate systems. Attend all classes that count toward belt progression and learn the proper test trials, which consists of kata-forms, kumite-sparring, and kihon-basics in order to advance your belt standing.
-
4
Realize that a first-degree black belt merely states you have mastered the basics of karate; however, there are other degrees that afford more expertise to black belt status. Practice at home at least four times a week to master the basics of a particular belt and try finding a sparring partner to work with when not in classes.

5
Take advantage of any trips to China or Japan to learn from an authentic martial arts academy. Often the black belt test is given to students at a proper dojo in China. Consider working with a team and entering various competitions or karate showcases to fine-tune your skills.
