  1. Choosing A Kite

    • 1

Take a lesson from a reputable instructor. The instructor will tell you what to look for and how to determine if a kite feels right for you. Ask questions about the kite you use and make note of the features you like.

    • 2

Educate yourself on different models and features of kites. Visiting a shop is the best way to speak with an expert that can help with your specific needs. A salesperson should point out features such as performance, power control, safety features, and relaunch-ability (the ability to launch from the water).

Choose a kite type. There are 3 main categories of kites: inflatables, bow kites, and foil kites. Inflatable kites, or C kites are the most popular. The inflatable frame allow for easier launches in the water and good stability. Bow kites perform in wide wind ranges, can be de-powered quickly for safety and are easy to relaunch in the water. Foil kites are fabric with air pockets that can cover a wide wind range with a smaller surface area.

Determine the size of the kite. The larger the surface area, the more power the kite will have. Know your body weight, the wind range you will be kite surfing in, and your skill level. Beginners should start out with a medium sized kite with a large board for maximum stability.

Know your price range. Buying a second hand kite or last year's model is good choice if you're just starting out. As you advance in the sport, you may decide to have 2 or 3 different kites in a variety of sizes
