How to Attach a Surfboard to Existing Roof Racks

Attaching a surfboard to an existing roof rack can be a simple task. Once attached, the surfboard will sit securely on the roof rack and you can leave your worries about a surfboard flying down the highway at 60 mph at home. The easy installment and attachment takes minutes, and soon after, you’ll be at the beach enjoying your day in the sun, sand and surf. Most existing roof racks are mounted on SUVs or sport-wagon vehicles, with one bar extending across the width of the vehicle at the front of the vehicle, and one located at the back. These racks are designed to hold luggage, gear and larger-than-normal baggage, so it shouldn’t be a problem securing a surfboard.

Instructions

    • 1

Wrap each towel around each existing roof rack bar so that each provides a cushion for the surfboard against the hardness of the bar.

    • 2

Place the surfboard on the towels—top-side down—with the fins of the surfboard located just in front of the front roof-rack bar.

    • 3

Attach a bungee cord from one side of the front roof rack bar across the width of the vehicle, just behind the upturned surfboard fins. The bungee cord must be tightly stretched with pressure so that it holds the surfboard down while driving.

    • 4

Do the same with a second bungee cord on the back bar of the roof rack, straight across the width of the vehicle.

    • 5

Stretch a bungee cord diagonally from the front right corner of the roof rack to the back left corner of the roof rack. Do the same with the fourth bungee cord, stretching it from the front left to the back right.
