How to Build Vertical Surfboard Racks

Surfboards are an expensive investment that can last for years when properly cared for. One way to extend the life of your board is to store it properly out of harm's way. A do-it-yourself indoor vertical surfboard rack will help keep your boards organized and protected. Using materials found at your local hardware store and around the garage, you can build your own rack and still have time to hit the ocean for a couple waves.

  • One 2-by-4
  • Pencil
  • yard stick or ruler

  • Stud finder
  • Level
  • Wood screws
  • 2 one-inch diameter wood dowels per board
  • Wood glue
  • Zip ties (optional)
  • Foam and other protective material (optional)
  • Hooks and eyes (optional)
  • Nylon string (optional)

      Grab a ruler or yardstick and a pencil. Lengthwise, mark a center line on the 2-by-4 inch piece of wood. For large boards, measure out 12 to 13 inches and mark spots to drill holes for your dowels. For shorter boards, mark 11 inch marks.

      Use a drill or drill press to drill the marked spots on your 2-by-4 board for the dowels. The best bit to use is one that measures the same of the dowel diameter so that the dowels will fit snugly into their holes.

      Cut down the dowels into 24 inch long segments if needed.

      Using a stud finder, find the wall studs where you want to mount your 2-by-4 board. With wood screws and an extra set of hands, attach your board to the wall studs at a height tall enough to clear your longest board.

      Put wood glue onto one end of each dowel. Place one dowel into each of the holes. Let dry for at least one hour.

      Protect your board by adding pads for the tails of your boards and the spots where they'll rest upon the dowels. Wrap and zip-tie foam around the dowels and place some material on the floor where the tail of your board will lie.

      Locking your boards in place can also be a good idea. Take screw eyes and screw them into both ends of each dowel. Using string, connect the hook and eyes together so you can secure your boards to their slots. This can help prevent theft, but also helps keep your boards from falling over.
