How to Build a Surfboard Shaping Stand

A surfboard shaping stand is used for surfboard maintenance. It consists of two supports that have a three-inch to four-inch groove that the surfboard sits in horizontally. Surfboard stands are often built out of basic materials such as standard construction lumber. Surfboards are lightweight, so the stands only need to be able to support the abuse provided from the maintenance of the surfboards. A surfboard shaping stand can be built in less than an hour spent at a workbench.

Instructions

    • 1

Lay a 36-inch board flat and lay a 46-inch board on top of it. One pair of ends should be flush and so do the sides of the boards. Screw the 46-inch board to the 36-inch board using two screws spaced 20 inches apart. Turn the boards over so the 36-inch board is on top of the 46-inch board and screw another 46-inch board to the 36-inch board in the same manner. Repeat this step with the last 36-inch board and the last two 46-inch boards. These are the two supports to your surfboard shaping stand.

    • 2

Position a 38-inch board against on of the supports. The board should be against the edge of each 46-inch board and one side of the 36-inch board. One edge of the 38-inch board should be flush with the ends of the three boards that make up the support. The ends of the 38-inch board should also be 15.75 inches away from the sides of the 46-inch board. Screw the 38-inch board to the support using four screws. Repeat this process with the other 38-inch board and the other support. These are the feet to your shaping stand.

Stand the two supports upright so the feet are parallel and so the outside edges of the supports are 40 inches apart. The spaces between the 46-inch boards should be aligned. Position a 40-inch board against the supports so its bottom edge is resting on the feet. The ends of the 40-inch board should be flush with the outsides of the supports. Screw the board to the supports in this position using two screws for each end. Repeat this process on the opposite sides of the stand so the two 40-inch boards are aligned.
