How to Attach a Leg Rope to a Surfboard

Novice and expert surfers alike share at least one thing -- the inevitability of wiping out. Necessity being the mother of invention, the leg rope -- or surf leash -- was born. In the event of a wipe out, the rope keeps the board and surfer tethered. A proper string length and knot ensure that the leg rope is safely affixed to the surfboard, and without causing any damage to the board. The end of the leg rope will either be sewn closed or include a Velcro closure. The method of attachment differs slightly for each.

Instructions

  1. Enclosed Leash

    • 1

Thread the leg rope string through the enclosed end of the leash saver -- the end of the leash opposite the portion that attaches to the ankle.

    • 2

Pass either end of the string beneath the leash plug, at the tail-end of the surfboard.

    • 3

Bring both ends of the string together. Wrap the ends around an index finger, creating a loop. Pass the ends through the loop to form a knot. Pull the knot tight.

    • 4

Pull the leg rope taught, and observe the position of the leash saver against the side of the surfboard. The leash saver prevents the string from cutting into the side of the board. If the string, rather than the leash saver, is touching the side of the surfboard, tie a knot closer to the leash plug to shorten the length of the string.

    Velcro Leash

    • 5

Bring the two ends of the leg rope string together. Wrap the ends around an index finger, and pull the ends through the loop to form a tight knot.

    • 6

Pass the loop of the string beneath the leash plug, at the tail-end of the surfboard.

    • 7

Thread the knot through the loop, and pull the knot up.

    • 8

Open the Velcro at the end of the leash saver. Attach the Velcro ends around the loop in the string. Seal the Velcro ends shut.

    • 9

Pull on the leash to make sure the string does not touch the side of the surfboard at any point. If the string touches, fashion a knot closer to the plug to shorten the length of the string.
