Inspect the freewheel and count how many teeth it has. The most common type of freewheel has 16 teeth. This is the most important characteristic to take note of as it determines just about all the relevant variables you're concerned about while riding or racing.

Replace the freewheel with another with fewer teeth to increase the power of each pedal stroke. The trade off here is that initial acceleration will become more difficult since each pedal stroke will require more force from your legs for a successful rotation.

Replace the freewheel with another with more teeth to help initial acceleration. Additional teeth on the freewheel make it easier to pedal and therefore easier to start your bike from a stationary position.
