1
Go to a local BMX chapter meeting to find out what exactly you'll need to start BMX riding. Ask about equipment, eligibility and race rules and regulations. All BMX member groups and chapters operate according to track style and race rules; and membership dues may also differ between groups.

2
Obtain all your BMX gear. You will need a helmet, which covers the face and has a chin strap, elbow and knee pads and long sleeve shirts and pants.
-
3
Make your bike BMX ready. According to specific rules for certain chapters, this may include removing the chain guard, kick stand, reflectors and fenders. Wheels shouldn't exceed 20 inches; and handlebars cannot exceed 28 inches. Check your breaks to make sure they're in good working order. Install pads on the top handlebar cross bar, goose neck and top frame tube. Inspect your frame to ensure that no fractures exist.
-
4
Pay your membership dues and sign up for a race once the chapter has inspected your bike, and cleared you for a race.
