How to Take Links Out of a BMX Bike Chain

The chain on every BMX bike stretches after constant riding. The links on a BMX chain are connected to each other by a small metal pin on each side of the chain link. The BMX chain does not have to be replaced every time the chain stretches as long as you have the right tool and knowledge. This should take you five minutes for every chain link that you need to remove.

Instructions

  1. Removing the links

    • 1

Locate the BMX bike chain link that you need to remove from the bike chain. Wipe off the chain oil that is on that chain link using a rag.

    • 2

Place the chain link removal tool over the metal pin on one side of the chain link. Line up the pin on the link with the push rob on the link removal tool.

    • 3

Twist the handle on the bike chain removal tool until the metal pin holding the chain together comes off of the chain link. Pull the chain apart. Repeat for the chain link on the opposite side of that chain link.

    Reconnecting the chain

    • 4

Insert the chain link between the arms of the chain link on the opposite end of the chain.

    • 5

Insert the metal pin into the holes on the chain link and press the pin into the link.

    • 6

Place the link removal tool over the chain link and twist the handle to push the metal pin into the chain link, securely connecting the chain together.
