Motocross Training for Kids
-
Bike and Gear
-
Familiarize your child with riding before hitting the track. Though it can be hard to resist the temptation to buy a bigger bike "because he will grow into it," your child's feet must be able to touch the ground when his bike is stopped. Your child also needs to learn the importance of wearing the proper safety gear at all times: a helmet, gloves, over-the-ankle boots, goggles, a chest protector, long pants and a long-sleeved shirt.
Basic Training
-
The Motorcycle Safety Foundation offers basic lessons in safe and responsible motorcycle riding for children as young as 6 years old. Riders should be competent in shifting, stopping and avoiding obstacles in various terrain before they are introduced to the motocross track.
Track Training
-
A child should be introduced to the motocross track on a weekday, when not many riders present. She should ride at a slow pace until she becomes familiar with the track layout. For those children who are serious about racing, the American Motorcyclist Association (AMA) offers motocross lessons for children as young as 4 years old. Membership in AMA may be required.
