Safety Equipment for Motocross
-
Helmet and Goggles
-
Helmets for motocross should be certified by the Department of Transportation or Snell and be full face helmets. In order for the helmet to provide the best protection, it must fit properly and not obstruct the rider's vision. The helmet should be replaced if it shows signs of damage or cracks, if the chin strap is fraying or torn or if the padding is compressed. In addition, riders should wear goggles to protect their eyes.
Chest and Back Protection
-
There are two types of chest protection. A chest protector may be soft and worn under the jersey. Hard chest protectors are available to be worn over the jersey. Hard chest protectors are usually required if the rider is under 16 years of age.
Spine protection is not required in motocross, but a spine protector can help prevent and minimize spinal injury in case of a crash. In addition, riders may choose to wear neck protection. A neck roll supports the back of the neck and limits the range of motion to prevent whiplash type injuries. Neck braces are also available.
Gloves and Boots
-
Boots are important to provide ankle support and protection in a crash. Boots are tall enough to protect the lower calf and leg. In addition, riders should wear gloves while riding. Gloves should fit well and allow enough dexterity to operate the bike.
Other Equipment
-
Riders should wear long-sleeves and long-pants to protect the skin in case of a fall. Although not required, riders may also choose to wear knee and wrist braces, ankle support and shoulder support. A kidney belt may also be worn to protect the kidneys and lower back.
