Start out riding in first gear.

Release the throttle until your RPMs are lowered, so as to avoid damage if done incorrectly.

Pull the clutch in until it engages. If you are unsure how far to pull it, pull it all the way.

Position your left toe underneath the shifter and press down. At this point, the main shifter on your dirt bike will be in second gear.

Release the clutch and give your dirt bike some gas.
