Ride regularly. This may seem like an easy answer, but some riders do not practice as much as they should. As often as you can (and can afford!) practice on your bike around a local race track. The more practice you get, the more you'll understand how to handle your bike and the better your will compete in a race.

Stretch before riding. Do a few jumping jacks or lunges to get your muscles warmed up. This will prevent injury and any muscles (especially the forearms) from tightening up.

    • 3

Walk after stretching and before riding. Take a brisk walk, about 5 to 10 minutes, especially on a colder day to warm your body up. You do not want to ride a bike when your body is all stiff. Besides making riding uncomfortable, a stiff body can delay your performance.

Lift at the gym about 1 to 3 times per week. You don't need to do anything serious, but lifting some free weights will help build your muscles. The stronger your muscles, the better you will be able to handle your bike and the better you will ride.

Focus on your nutrition. Many professional motocross riders have consulted bodybuilders and personal nutritionists to develop a plan for your body. If you can't afford this, simply focus on what you are eating. Cut out any unnecessary junk food and replace it with fruits and vegetables. If you are healthy, it will be easier to breathe and the results will show in your race time and performance on your bike.
