How to Make a Roller Derby Skate Toe Cover

Roller derby is a rough and violent sport, which means that it's easy to get injured if you're not wearing the right equipment. Helmets, elbow pads and knee guards are all important protective pieces, but don't forget about your feet and toes. Roller skates are made of thin synthetic materials, so when you hit the side of your foot or your toes on another skate or an obstacle, you can potentially break a bone. Roller skate companies sell toe protectors, but these can be quite expensive, some costing at least $30. With some duct tape and rubber, however, you can make your own cheap yet effective toe guard.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the length and width of the toes on your roller skates. Take the measurements just below the laces but just above the wheels.

    • 2

Cut two pieces of rubber from the car mat to the dimensions measured in Step 1.

    • 3

Place one of the cut pieces of rubber mat over one of the roller skate toes. Wrap the rubber piece and skate toe with duct tape to hold the rubber in place. Wrap it at least four times.

Repeat Step 3 for the other roller skate toe.
