How to Make a Harness to Hang Upside Down

Full body harnesses are used in parachuting, bungee jumping and rock climbing, and by those who work in high locations. These harnesses consist of two thigh bands, a waist band, a chest band and two shoulder-to-leg bands. Only the chest and waist bands have clips to open and close them. This is a typical safety harness and will support the weight of an adult male. Do not use this harness until it is checked by an authorized technician for safety, such as a skydiving instructor.

Instructions

    • 1

Measure the circumference of the wearer's waist, upper thighs and chest -- above the sternum.

    • 2

Cut bands from polyester yarn strips, according to the measurements in Step 1. Sew the thigh bands into complete circles. Attach a metal seat-belt clip to the ends of the waist and chest clip.

    • 3

Measure the distance from the front of the thigh up, over the shoulder, and down the back -- to the back of the thigh. Cut two polyester yarn strips according to the measurement.

    • 4

Place the chest, waist and thigh clips on the wearer.

    • 5

Sew one end of the polyester yarn strip to the outside front portion of the thigh band. Pull up the strip, and sew it to the waist band. Then pull up the material, and sew it to the chest band. Bring the strip over the shoulder. Sew it to the back of the chest band, the back of the stomach band, and the back outside of the thigh band. Repeat with the other side.

Sew carabiners to the points on the harness where you want safety wires/clips to attach, such as the tops of the shoulders.
