How to Make a Kiteboarding Board

Kiteboarding is an extreme sport in which the rider harnesses the power of the wind with a large kite while riding a wooden board. The wind propels the rider across the water at tremendous speeds and can even launch the rider into the air. Because buying a pre-assembled kiteboard can be very expensive, making your own kiteboard is an alternative to consider and can be accomplished with a few easily attained items.

Things You'll Need

  • Rectangular piece of wood as long as your chest and as wide as your shoulders
  • 2 windsurfing foot straps
  • 2 screws, 14x1
  • Power saw
  • Power sander
  • Waterproof wood varnish
  • Permanent marker

Instructions

    • 1

Draw the desired shape of your board onto the wood. Due to its sturdiness and reliability, the best type of wood to use is pine.

    • 2

Cut out the shape of your board using the saw with the piece of wood.

    • 3

Sand the edges of your board with your power sander. The ideal edge for a kiteboard is a "neutral edge" where both the top and bottom of the board meet in the middle. Start with a coarse sandpaper then finish with a fine sandpaper.

    • 4

Coat the board with several layers of varnish. Between each layer applied allow the varnish to dry completely to ensure a hard finish. Pine will require a minimum of four coats to acquire a diamond finish.

    • 5

Determine your natural stance on the board by placing it on the ground and standing naturally upon it. Mark the position of your feet with your permanent marker.

    • 6

Screw the foot straps to the board with your drill.
