How to Make Homemade Kiteboarding Gear

Kiteboarding is a water sport that uses the power of the wind to pull a person attached to a board along the surface of the water. The basic materials for kiteboarding are a board, similar to a wakeboard, a kite with string and a bar to hold onto. Some designs for homemade kiteboarding equipment can include expensive materials and complex designs, but a simple kiteboard can be manufactured cheaply and inexpensively. A homemade kiteboard can be constructed from wood because the material is easy to work with and can be painted with a stain to provide protection from damage caused by water.

Instructions

    • 1

Draw the shape of the desired kiteboard onto a rectangular piece of wood. The board should be approximately as wide as the user's shoulder width. The wood should be cut with a power saw into the shape of a rectangle with four rounded corners.

    • 2

Sand the edges of the wood with a sander using coarse sandpaper at first and fine grained sandpaper as the edges are sanded. The edges should be sanded from the bottom and top of the wood to create a tapered effect.

    • 3

Coat the kiteboard with a floor stain. At least three coats should be applied to the surface of the board. By adding more coats the protection of the board from water damage can be ensured. Allow the board to dry.

    • 4

Place windsurfing footstraps on the board in the desired kiteboarding stance of the rider. The footstraps should be positioned at an angle of between 15 and 21 degrees, positioned at 1 to 2 inches from the edge of the board.

    • 5

Screw the footstraps into place before adding one or two screws to the center of one edge of the board. These screws can be used to attach a rope and carabineer to the board where desired.
