Uses of Climbing Ropes
-
Solo Rock Climbing
-
Climbing ropes provide a good grip and ensure support for solo rock climbers. When strung through carabiners -- metal loops a solo climber places as he climbs -- rope and carabiner break a climber's fall should he slip.
Rock Climbing With a Partner
-
The strength of climbing ropes are key to the rappel and belay maneuvers of climbers. One climber can support, or belay, another's entire weight with one rope, as the climber rappels, or eases herself down the face of a rock wall.
Boating
-
The qualities of climbing ropes are well suited to boating, most notably for securing a boat to a dock cleat. The flexibility of a climbing rope makes it ideal for towing small crafts behind a boat, be it a smaller boat that ran out of gas or an inner tube in use for a fun ride.
Lasso
-
If you have the skills, climbing ropes can also be used to tie a lasso. This can be especially helpful for beginners in lasso. You can tie a climbing rope into a loop and work on lassoing inanimate objects. Once you get better, you can also use the climbing rope to lasso moving objects. Climbing rope is ideal for beginners in this case because it is more flexible and lighter than normal rope. This makes it easier on the hands of a beginner who may not have experience with true lasso rope.
